Feel the rhythm. Move your feet. Let the music take you somewhere warm.
This Easter weekend, ZU Gallery is trading the quiet of the season for something that pulses and grooves. Join us for a Calypso & Salsa Dance Party with the infectious beats of DJ P.A. No passport required.
Kick off the night with a free beginner Salsa lesson led by Touria Berrada. No experience or partner needed.
What is Calypso?
Born in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 20th century and rooted in West African rhythmic traditions, Calypso became a powerful voice for the people. A musical language used to tell stories, celebrate community, and lift spirits. With its syncopated rhythms, steel drum shimmer, and irresistibly upbeat energy, it laid the groundwork for Soca and Reggae. Paired with the passionate, partner-driven footwork of Salsa, tracing its roots through Cuba, Puerto Rico, and New York City, this is a night where centuries of culture meet one very good dance floor.
Why Easter Weekend?
Across the Caribbean and Latin America, Easter isn’t just a solemn occasion. It’s the launch of a full seasonal celebration. In Trinidad, it carries the lingering spirit of Carnival. In Latin cultures, Semana Santa gives way to festive community gatherings full of music and dancing. We’re honoring that tradition right here in Cortez as spring takes hold in the Southwest.
Dress the Part — Caribbean Chic encouraged!
Think bright colors, tropical prints, flowy skirts, linen shirts, and comfortable shoes you can actually dance in. Come as vibrant as the music.
Strike a Pose
We’ll have a photo booth set up so you can capture the night. Dress up, show out, and take something home to remember it by.
No experience needed. All are welcome. Come ready to dance or just to feel it.
Free and open to the community.
