Learn to make your own folded-nib pen! We will build our own drawing pens from common materials and craft metal.
The folded pen is a simple art tool that pares down the mechanics of pen and ink to its rawest, most essential form. Not surprisingly, the marks made with a folded pen also tend toward the raw and essential. Each pen is unique. The large, flexible nibs offer a variety of line qualities, and can accommodate a variety of media, from water to ink to paint..
The construction of the pens will be followed by an introduction to calligraphy and lettering techniques.
After the class, we’ll have an optional open-studio, where students will have an opportunity to try different kinds of dip pens, learn some color-ink techniques, or refine their lettering or pen-building skills with the instructor.
Come prepared to get messy with ink!
Everyone will take home their own folded pen, along with a kit so that they can make more folded pens at home. Students may also create works of art that they could bring home.
