By now, we’ve all heard of Kombucha, even if we aren’t quite sure what it is. Since the mid 1990’s, this bottled beverage has been sold commercially and consistently gaining in popularity. With an average price of $4 per bottle it’s also become an influential part of beverage manufacturer’s portfolios (like PepsiCo). But this wonderfully beneficial and tasty drink actually has it’s roots in Northern China (formerly referred to as Manchuria) and dates back to at least 220BCE. It then travelled along the Silk Road to Japan and Russia where it’s been consumed for it’s health benefits ever since.
In this class you will learn the simple, tried and true method of brewing kombucha in your own home for literally pennies. Home brewing has more than just cost benefits…you’ll also have the freedom to create flavors you love while knowing your kombucha is fresh and made with ingredients you sourced yourself. We will cover potential health benefits, first fermentation (F1), second fermentation (F2), tea varieties, adding flavors with fruit, herbs, and spices, as well as the care and maintenance of your SCOBY (and what that is).
All participants will receive a brewing vessel, tea of their choice to begin their own first ferment, a SCOBY and “starter fluid”, a high pressure rated bottle to create a carbonated second ferment, and 1.5 hours of instruction with Lynn from Mutiny Ranch to confidently begin brewing kombucha at home. Samples will be available during class to help spark ideas for flavoring your own kombucha. $40
Proceeds benefit the animals of Mutiny Ranch.
